Background of the Study
Digital discourse markers are pivotal in shaping the coherence and interactivity of online communication, particularly in Nigerian Pidgin chat groups. In these virtual environments, discourse markers such as abbreviations, emojis, and specific syntactic patterns facilitate smooth conversational transitions and signal shifts in topic or tone (Adeniran, 2023). Nigerian Pidgin, as a lingua franca, is characterized by its flexible grammatical structure and vibrant expressions, making it especially adaptable to digital communication. In chat groups, users employ digital discourse markers to manage turn-taking, indicate emphasis, and establish rapport. This adaptation of traditional discourse markers to a digital context represents a significant evolution in language use, driven by technological advancements and shifting communication norms (Babatunde, 2024). The study explores how these markers contribute to the overall discourse coherence in Nigerian Pidgin chat groups, highlighting their role in negotiating meaning and ensuring clarity in fast-paced online interactions. Statement of the Problem
While digital discourse markers have been widely observed in online communication, their specific functions and impacts in Nigerian Pidgin chat groups remain underexplored. The rapid evolution of digital language and the informal nature of chat environments present challenges in identifying consistent markers and understanding their role in discourse coherence (Folarin, 2024). This gap in research limits our understanding of how Nigerian Pidgin adapts to digital communication demands. The study seeks to address these limitations by examining the types, frequency, and communicative functions of digital discourse markers in Nigerian Pidgin chat groups, aiming to provide a systematic analysis of their influence on online interactions.
